This tutorial explains how to view hidden files like .htaccess with the free open source FTP client FileZilla. These instructions are for version 2 and version 3 of the software.
Filezilla Version 2
To view hidden files in FileZilla 2 you need to digg into the settings. Select “Edit -> Settings -> Interface settings -> Remote file list” then near the bottom of the window select the check box “Always show hidden files” as shown below…
FileZilla Version 3
To view hidden files with FileZilla 3 it is simply a matter of selecting “Server” in the main menu then selecting “Force showing hidden files”…
When you do this you will receive a warning but it is nothing to worry about. Read the warning, click OK and hidden files like .htaccess will now be visible when you connect to your server.

thank you very much, that’s a weird place for the developers to hide that setting. i was having some issues with a Dreamhost server and i wasn’t sure why — turns out that they disable showing hidden files by default, whereas other servers i connect to with Filezilla seem to show hidden files by default. your post helped me figure it out, so i appreciate it.

I had selected the “Force Showing Hidden Files” feature in the “Server” menu. I still could not see the .htaccess files on the remote side. It was NOT an issue of my host not showing them because I could see them just fine in the remote panel in Dreamweaver. I just installed FileZilla yesterday – vsn 3.2.0 – so I’m not real familiar with it. What I did find, however, was that in View > Filename Filters, under “Remote Filters”, “Configuration files” was checked. It must have come that way because I had not changed any settings. I unchecked it, and, voila, now I can see the htaccess files on the remote server.
Hope this helps someone and saves them the time it took me to figure this out! (as a FileZilla newbie)

Yeah, FileZilla’s development team doesn’t win high marks from me for hiding .htaccess files by default AND stashing the option to view it in a random menu (should be under “View”)…

Still can’t find my .htaccess file. does this mean I need to get from my hosting?
Any help. Thanks

Hi Kathy,
Are you sure the .htaccess file exists? Make an empty .htaccess file upload it. If you can see the file you upload then it didn’t exist in the first place :)
Also go View > Filename Filters and under Remote Filters make sure nothing is checked. Thanks to Alicia for that although this option definitely isn’t checked by default.

I’m running Filezilla 3.2.8.1 and the method of showing .htaccess has changed.
In the tool bar just go to Server > Force showing hidden files
November 17th, 2009 at 12:45 am
I have selected the force option and it still doesn’t show me the files, though ws_ftp does. Is it a bug in filezilla?

Thanks for this, I had already ticked all the things I was supposed to before finding this. I found I had to close Filezilla and open it again, and now I have access to all my hidden files again.

I am sure this is a joke from the developers to hide the hidden file feature … LOL
For those if you can’t see the .htaccess or hidden files immediately, just refresh the file list panel. If you browsed the folder earlier and have just turned on the “Force showing hidden files” feature they wont show up immediately unless you force refresh.
