How to change your Windows XP product key without reinstalling

This tutorial explains how to change your windows xp product key / xp serial / xp license without using software or reinstalling. To do this you need to edit the registry to deactivate windows, then run msoobe.exe to enter your new product key.
You can download software to help you do this, but that’s for girls. Real men do it this way…
1. Run regedit and drill down to:
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents.
Select WPAEvents then on the right double click “OOBETimer” and change at least one digit of this value to deactivate windows.
2. Choose run from start menu and type this command in the run box:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to get the Activate Windows wizard, select “Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows”, click next.
3. In the next screen click the “Change Product Key” button.
4. Now enter your new product key, click the update button, close the wizard and reboot. Please note the XP product key FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8 in the image below will not work. This is the “corporate” key used by pirated versions of windows and has now been blacklisted by Microsoft.
5. When your computer restarts, enter the command in step 2 to verify windows is activated and you should see “windows is already activated”.
Changing your xp key is perfectly legal if you have a valid key. You can even automate the process with a visual basic script which you can find on Microsoft’s website.
Update: If you click the link to Microsoft above you will now find the following message:
Warning The steps in the article are effective only on Volume License media. If you try these steps on OEM media or on retail media, you will not change the product key.
But unless something has changed this just isn’t true. I have used the visual basic script they provide to change both OEM and retail media keys and it worked just fine.

Hi Dani, you need your own product key. If you are using the key in the image it won’t work.

Please reply to my email. Thanx. The prolem is that I did had it like the last screen shows, but then whenever i clicked on Ok, it would go back to Log On mode, and then i would have to log in again, and that’s how i just go back and forth. I just can’t use my comp normally.

Hi Jeffrey,
I can’t find anything relating to that error but it does sound like a corrupt operating system file. You could try copying msoobe.exe from a working widows XP system in the hope that that is the corrupt fiile but I really am guessing, sorry.

Hi Fahad,
It shouldn’t log you out at any stage of the process. When you finish step 4, reboot, then log in, what happens?
Have not received any emails from you but it is better for everyone if I respond here so they can see any solutions.

hey, my windows xp isnt “genuine” enough for windows and I purchased xp from them for 150, It then told me to go back to the home page to convert or something and I couldn’t. THanks to you I can change the key to a genuine one they send me so they will leave me alone. Thanks man ill stay tuned and let you know when I install it

oh and one more thing, Do you actually talk to an Xp Tech? or if u just hit change product key you don’t have to?
August 5th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
Hi Keith,
Always good to hear I have helped somebody ;) No you don’t need to actually talk to Microsoft… the only reason you choose the telephone option at step 2 is to bring up the “Change Product Key” button.

Hi Dave, make sure you complete step 1 properly which de-activates windows.
Hi Ahmed, sorry but I don’t know what is causing that problem but I can make a few suggestions. First close all running programs, then close all non-system processes by doing a ctrl-alt-delete and selecting the processes tab. If that does not work you could try booting into safe mode then running the activation process but I have not tested this. Good luck!

thanx for replying brett but i did d first step so many times afer dat when i enter %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a a blue screen appears and nothing else. it needs a net connection? plz reply.
September 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
No you don’t need an internet connection if you choose the phone option. If the OK button is missing though it sounds like there are more serious problems with your system, possibly a virus or malware of some kind. Sorry but with the info I have I can’t really be more helpful than that.

Hay Brett,
I am not sure if my windows xp is genuine or not and that is why I have not installed MS WGA. Should I go through these steps to change my key with a genuine win xp first and then install WGA?
And if and when I have done this steps successfully windows will not ug me anymore with WGA and I can work normally and run all future updates?
Thanks a lot and I would appreciat your response.
