Google chrome no longer displays the http:// prefix at the start of Internet address URL’s! As soon as I started Chrome this morning I noticed it and it is damn ugly in my opinion… I’m just not used to seeing naked URL’s in my browser address bar. The fact that the URL prefix is missing from URL’s can only be confusing to the average internet user, and I can see myself having to explain this over and over and over. To add to the confusion, if you copy and paste the URL the http:// bit suddenly appears in the pasted text so I’m going to have to explain that too. Thanks G you just made my life a little less fun.

Here’s a screen shot of the ugliness…

Google Chrome Goes Naked dropping http:// from all URL's

I first heard about the Chrome dev teams intentions to drop http:// from URL’s several months ago when a storm erupted on the Chrome dev mailing lists. They seemed to be burying their heads in the sand and were locking discussions that complained or criticized the change. This seemed to be a very un-Google thing to do so I thought they would come to their senses before implementing the change but it looks like I was mistaken. Maybe I’m over reacting and I will get used to it, but I really don’t think so.
